Copiah Animal Shelter 2018 “Steel Magnolias” GALA

By Laurie Williams, Event Chairman

(August 2018, Gallman, MS).  Jackson led his beautiful wife Shelby onto the dance floor for their first dance as more than 200 honored wedding guests looked on.  Jackson was played by Hayden Switzer, son of Brad and Trisha, from Clinton, MS and an upcoming junior at Mississippi College.  The bride was played by Copiah County native Hailey Williams, daughter of Dr. Dale and Laurie Williams, formerly of Hazlehurst.  Her biggest complaint of the evening was the weight of the heavily beaded gown from the ‘90s and her constant fear of her chest falling out!

Also in attendance was a remarkable Ouiser, played by Shelter Board Member Kathy Friday, who amused guests wearing Ouiser’s overalls and grumpy mood.  Truvy in all her glory was played by Copiah Academy student Isabelle Henderson.  Clairee played by our very own Mayor of Crystal Springs, Sally Garland.  A pregnant Anelle was played by Mallory Key from Franklin Tennessee. The priest was played by Sam Graeff from Brandon.  Last but not least was a very hot and sweaty Easter Bunny played by Event Chairman and former Hazlehurst native Laurie Williams.  Many wedding guests arrived in style, competing in our costume contest for generously donated Chick-fil-A gift cards, Amazon gift cards and Pappas Pizza gift cards.  We had extra Anelles, Clairees, and one Drum complete with a water gun to help us chase the birds away, lots of big hats, floral dresses and pink, pink, pink!  Some of Truvy’s customers were obviously so excited to come to the wedding they arrived still in their hair curlers and beauty parlor smocks.

Guests enjoyed an evening of dancing and a delicious buffet which included tender brisket sandwiches, hot artichoke dip, hot buffalo chicken dip, fruit and cheese trays, stuffed mushroom caps and PINK lemonade.  The bride and groom fed each other an incredibly moist wedding cake baked and donated by Martha McDonald.  Valerie Calhoun baked and donated an amazingly accurate rendition of the armadillo groom’s cake from the movie, that was of course red velvet inside.

A variety of great donated silent auction and raffle items were scooped up by bidders, raising more money for the animals.  Congratulations to Pam Pilgrim, the winner of the drawing for a hot Charbroil Gas Grill!

Tre-von Bobbet, a guest from Florence Animal Clinic, caught the garter and Clara Williams, a junior at Ole Miss and the bride’s sister, caught the bridal bouquet.  Neither one claimed to have any romantic prospects in mind.  The evening ended in a raucous game of Steel Magnolias team trivia with over 20 teams rushing the front with their answers.  Some of the teams competing were the Hot Mess Express, the Bloody Armadillos and Blush and Bashful.  Two teams, Mallory & Emilee vs. the Rabbits were tied for first when asked to spell the impossible name of the town where the movie was filmed, Natchitoches, LA.  The Rabbits, representing the business A Second Glance/The Lucky Rabbit, pulled ahead winning themselves a delicious donated pecan pie from Buttermilk Sky and a 12 pack of Anelle’s favorite cherry coke to wash it down.  They attributed all their success to their team captain, the gentleman dressed like Drum, waving his water gun.

Everyone enjoyed our idea of a movie-themed Gala.  There was a lively campaign for Star Wars next year.  (It is under consideration).  Copiah Animal Shelter would like to thank all of our business sponsors as well as countless individuals who helped to make this event happen. Without you attending, donating, sponsoring, cooking, baking, decorating, and cleaning up for this Event there would not be a Shelter and we could not do the important work of housing and caring for and finding homes for the many homeless animals in Copiah County and neighboring areas!
